How to Shop for Windows PDF Print E-mail

A beautiful modern window can do more than light a room. Today's windows add an atmosphere of comfortable, open living – while reducing energy costs. Here are a few things to consider while you shop your window choices at Power Building Products.

Windows come in many shapes and sizes. The most stunning window effects are usually achieved when two or more individual windows are joined together in the same space. Mullions are used to secure and fill the gaps between each grouped window. A variety of mull coverings and mouldings are available to complement every designer style.

Window frames are constructed of wood, vinyl, or aluminum. Some window frames may be covered with a vinyl weatherproofing material on the exterior. This is referred to as cladding.

Window frames hold the sash (the part of the window that holds the glass.) Sashes may be fixed or movable.

Windows construction involves one or more panes of glass separated by strips of wood, vinyl, or metal. The separating strips are usually called “grilles.”

Grille Between Glass (GBG) windows are easily cleaned, because the grilles are between the interior and exterior panes of glass.

Divided Light Windows contain inside, outside, and interior grilles; and provide dramatic lighting effects.

Single-Hung Windows contain one stationary sash and one that can open.

Double-Hung Windows contain two sashes that each open – one up, and one down. Some double-hung windows are built with tilt latches, allowing the homeowner to clean both sides of the glass without going outside.

Casement Windows open outward, usually by means of a crank.

Sliding windows open to the side.

Accent Windows aren't intended to open. They're used in combination with one or more other windows for dramatic effect. Accent window styles include transoms, quarter rounds, ellipticals, circle heads, rounds, ovals, octagons, true radius, eyebrow units, and arch windows.

When measuring for new windows, subtract between one-half to one inch from your rough opening measurements – depending on how the window will be installed. Your salesman can help you figure the appropriate size.
