How to Shop for Doors PDF Print E-mail

Nothing welcomes you into a room quite like a well-constructed and great-looking door. Here are a few things to consider while you shop your door choices at Power Building Products.

Many doors will come pre-drilled for the hinges and handle on a certain side. Do you need to buy a left-hand door, or a right-hand door? Here's how to tell: Stand in front of the doorway so the door swings inward toward your body. If the door handle is on the right side, you're looking a right hand door. If the door handle is on the left side, you're looking at a left hand door.

Doors are constructed of decorative stain-grade or paint-grade wood, molded from a fiberglass composite, or welded from a fireproof metal. They may be solid, hollow-core, or filled with an insulating material.

Our doors are usually sold with a specific purpose in mind - namely, interior or exterior use. We’ll begin by discussing interior doors.

Interior doors consist of two basic types: panel or flush.

Interior panel doors are made of wood or fiberglass and contain insets filled with decorative wood or glass panels, or - in the case of molded doors - the panels may be simulated for decorative effect. Doors may contain as few as one or as many as twelve panels.

Interior flush doors contain a wooden framework covered by a sheet of wood veneer on each side. The veneer may be stain-grade or paint-grade, and may be hollow-core or filled.

Exterior (or Entry) doors are solid and built with a sturdier, more weatherproof construction than interior doors. They may be part of a larger “door unit” with matching side and top panes of glass and wood, or they may simply consist of a beautiful door hung in a simple frame.
